Three Ways To Declutter Your Playroom

It's no secret that many families are overwhelmed, over scheduled and over stimulated with just too much stuff in their homes. Here are a few simple tips for how to declutter your playroom today.

1. Learn to Enjoy Giving & Sharing

We know this is a hard lesson to learn! Work with your kids to find a local charity, shelters, etc. that is seeking toy donations. Ask your kids to pick a few toys each and take them along to hand-deliver your donations. Engaging your kids in the entire process will hopefully help widen their perspective about the need in the world, but also make downsizing their empire of toys a little less painful.

2. Do a Toy Fast

When they get particularly bad about leaving a trail of toys behind them across the house and yard, perhaps its time to try a toy fast. Have them each choose one toy and one stuffed animal to play with for a week. The rest get boxed up or closed in an extra room or closet. This sounds extreme, but we were surprised how well it went over. You’ll be amazed at how well they get along without them. Our kids whined for the first few hours, but before long they started using their imaginations and playing together. After the week, we brought the toys back out and they didn’t even play with them for the first couple of days (probably a sign we could have left them boxed up.

3. Stop Saving Toys for Younger Kids 'to use when they get older'

Let’s face it, there are a lot of Christmases, birthdays, Easters, and other opportunities for people to give them gifts between now and then. If you combine that with the toys you save, you will have a huge job managing that stuff. If you have some toys that are still in good condition, donate them to a friend with younger children.
