The Power of Play
So often we are told as parents that play is very important for our children. It's not a myth, play is crucial in helping our kids to develop- but why? Here are Creative QT's top reasons for why play is so powerful.
Play is Learning!
Kids learn by playing. They are constantly exploring and manipulating their toys to see how they work. Play is not a 'fun break' for kids, it is an essential part of their education. Whether it is done alone, with other children, or with adults, all forms of play are helping your child to learn about their surroundings, and also about their own personal abilities.
Patience, Failure and Persistence!
Play enables children to develop key mental skills that are required for many years to come. Even from a young age babies will get frustrated when playing. They soon learn that they have to work hard and be patient with their toys. Sometimes the toy will not do what they want, but if they keep trying hard eventually they will be successful. This will continue to be the case as they get older and continue to play with more challenging materials. This sense of dealing with failure and continuing to try is so important in life.
Social Skills!
Kids spend much of their time playing, and even better this is often done with other children or adults. These playful interactions are how babies learn to talk and communicate. If they are having fun, they are most likely completely engaged and willing to learn language. We also know just how tense sharing toys can get! Adults help teach children about social etiquette and emotional development through managing play situations. As children grow older, they begin to resolve these situations independently.
Creative Play Develops Creative Kids!
Creativity and innovation will help kids to go far when it comes to later life. These skills can be supported by offering children the opportunity to play with open-ended toys. Toys which require the child to apply their imagination are best. For example, building bricks, pretend food, play dough, loose parts, or dolls are all great options.
Fun, Fun, Fun!
Play is fun and at the end of the day all we really want is for our children to be happy! Nothing beats seeing those massive grins go from ear to ear on your kiddos. They are only young once and it is our job as parents to make sure they enjoy those early years and have positive learning experiences. Don't forget that play is also fun for us adults too! That's why here at Creative QT we believe in being intentional in order to Make Time Together through play!
So next time you question how to best support your child's development, remember the power of play!
