Slime and Spiders- Halloween Play Heaven for Kids!

Do your kids enjoy Halloween as much as ours? We love adding a spooky twist to our crafts and play at this time of year. That's why we got so excited when we saw these two fun ideas from Myriam who runs @mothercould on Instagram. She is a creative Mama of two gorgeous girls, who loves sharing play and recipe ideas with fellow parents. Which spooky activity will you try first?

 

 

Googly Eye Slime

The obsession with slime has reached an all time high. Kids of all ages are making slime left and right. Have you made it with your kids yet? Here’s a spooky twist on a Halloween inspired slime recipe which my kids had a blast with! My 4 year old calls it “spooky slime”.

 

 

What you'll need:

- 4oz Elmer’s Washable Clear Glue

- Borax powder

- Glitter

- Googly eyes

- Green food coloring

- ½ cup warm water (to mix with borax powder) 

- ½ cup tap water (to mix with glue)

- Medium size bowl (plastic is best for small children)

- Measuring cups

- Large spoon

 

 

Instructions:

• Measure 4oz of glue and pour it into the bowl.
• Mix ½ teaspoon of borax powder into ½ cup of warm water. Make sure all the grains dissolve and set aside.

 

 

• Add a couple of drops of green food coloring to ½ cup of tap water and pour it into the bowl with the glue.

 

 

• Add in a lot of googly eyes.
• Sprinkle in some glitter and mix very well.

 

 

• Little by little, add in the borax solution mixing as you go. You don’t necessarily have to add it all, add in just enough to get the desired slime texture.

 

 

• Manipulate the slime with your hands until its at the consistency you like. 

 

 

The key to a successful slime recipe is measuring. Be sure to measure out all of the materials, and pay careful attention to the changes in texture.

 

 

Your kids will love the slimey sensory experience, and just wait until you hear how much imaginative and creative play it sparks!

 

Sticky Spider Web

Help the spiders find their way home! It’s a simple invitation to play for little ones of multiple ages. Here, both my 12 month old and my 4 year old played together. The best part? You only need 2 materials!

 

 

What you'll need:

• Masking tape
• Pom poms (or a similar loose part, plastic spiders might even work!)

 

 

Instructions:

• On the side of a chair's legs (or in a doorway), use the masking tape to map out a spider's web, leaving the exposed sticky side outwards. 
• Place the pom poms in a bowl next to the web.
• Instruct the child to stick the pom poms onto the web as if they were spiders going home.

 

 

I used spiky pom poms to make it look like spiders, but any pom poms work. Let their imagination work its magic as they stick the spiders around the web, gradually moving them towards the center of the web. I particularly loved how both my kids were engaged and were working so hard on their fine motor skills, despite them being different ages.
