Getting kids interested in Math can be hard. That's why we believe that play based learning is a powerful education tool. Here's a super easy activity to work on addition using just a few materials.
- DUPLOs (we used the creative box and numbers from the train set)
- Creative QT Peel 'n Stick Baseplate, green 1-pack 10" x 10", $10.95
- Pom poms (we got a selection from Walmart and Michaels)
- Selection of scoopers and tongs
This is a fun hands on learning activity that will help your child to work on their addition skills, as well as giving those fine motor skills a good workout. Simply set up three DUPLO windows across the baseplate, each with a small boxed area behind them. Place number bricks on top of two of the windows, leaving the last one blank. We started with 2 + 4.
Ask your child to open the first window and 'post' 2 pom poms through it. Then repeat for the second window, this time posting 4 pom poms. Encourage your child to use their own decision making skills to choose which tools and which pom poms to use.
This part of the activity is great for number recognition, counting skills and fine motor development.
Once all the pom poms have been posted through the first two windows, it's time for your child to add them together and decide what the answer is. If you are working with younger children you can always encourage them to count all the pom poms behind the windows or use their fingers to count. For older kids this is good mental arithmetic.
Once they arrive at the answer, they can choose the correct number brick and place it on top of the final window. The last part of the task is to then post the correct number of total pom poms through the final window (in this case 6).
To extend this activity you could always apply the same principal but using subtraction, multiplication or division. It can also be fun to switch roles and let your child come up with the sum and they watch you solve it. This is always a fun way to model enthusiasm for learning.
It's also worth mentioning that if you have a younger sibling who isn't ready for the Math aspect of this activity, don't just leave them out. Allow them time to explore the set up as well. As you can see from the picture, little ones will love the challenge of simply opening and closing the windows, as well as pushing the pom poms through.
