What's the best thing about working for Creative QT? It definitely has to be the family focus. What I love is that we are parents ourselves so we get it! We get the daily struggles, we get the highs and the lows, we get the pressures, and we get the frustrations. We also get that sometimes we need a little help as parents. So when Creative QT owner Adam Hinkle told me about his latest product, the Chore Sticks, I was pretty excited!
Here's some context: I'm a Mom of a 5 yr old and 1 yr old who works part time from home for the lovely Creative QT. Despite dropping heavy hints, my husband didn't hire me a cleaner for my Christmas gift (instead I got an iRoomba so at least the floors are clean!), which means finding time to get the chores done is always a struggle. I'll be honest, it's the one part of Motherhood that I really don't enjoy. You finally get 10 minutes of peace and it has to be spent frantically cleaning. And let's be honest, it's a pretty thankless task too, within hours it looks like you never even bothered to do the chores!
I've always scoffed at people who say 'why not get the kids to help out around the house?'. Errr, have you met my kids! One will manipulate his way out of any situation, the other is only one and would make twice as much mess trying to clear up the initial mess! This is what I imagined to happen...
A sudden bout of nap-itis would strike:
The eyes would roll:
A game of hide-and-seek would commence:
Or I'd be squirted to insanity!
Can you relate to the above pictures? Yup that's kids right?! I was feeling a little skeptical when Adam sent us our Chore Sticks sample to test out to be honest. But I decided to embrace our new product- at worst I knew I'd have some giggles with my littles!
I'm a big believer in making life fun for kids so my first port of call was the dollar store. I made each of my kiddos a cute little chore basket with all of the essentials. I knew this would get them both excited as they love exploring new materials and tools. As you can see, big bro was pretty happy with his!
Ready, steady, draw the chore!
The concept behind Chore Sticks is simple- family members take it in turns to draw Chore Sticks from the pot, some are good, some are bad, and some are just down right ugly! My 5 yr old got so excited about the tension of choosing his own chore fate. Meanwhile baby sis just got excited about putting the sticks in and out of the tub!
Once the chore was chosen, I made sure that I spent some time explaining the chore to my kids. One of the big bonuses of the Chore Sticks is that they encourage family time. It's not about me sitting back and relaxing while they scrub the floors, it's about us making cleaning the house fun and a learning opportunity. Maybe when my kids are older they will get to a more independent stage, but for now I'm happy for it to be a team effort!
Making the Chore Sticks work for your family!
As I mentioned, my kids are young so there were some chores that weren't appropriate. That was no problem as you get 8 blank sticks in the pack. Simply take out the ones that don't work for your family and swap them for ones that will! For example, we added in a 'wash your dirty dishes' stick and set up a kid-friendly washing up station.
Both my kids loved this sensory play experience (and to be honest so did I!). We splashed and scrubbed and laughed together for a good half hour. Baby sis could not get enough of all the new sponges and scrubbers she could get her hands on!
Don't forget to get your own hands dirty too!
I can't stress enough how important it is to get involved with your kiddos when using this product. My kids always get strangely excited when I get the broom out to sweep the kitchen floor. My little man thought all his Christmases had come at once when he drew this stick and got to use the broom! And I have to say he did a surprisingly good job too!
So there it is, the Chore Sticks really do make doing the chores Good, Clean Fun for the Whole Family! But being a Mom who loves play based learning, what impresses me most about the product is the creative play and learning that it prompts. Oh and how can I forget the fun memories we made giggling our way through the chores! That's money very well spent in my book!

Shared materials are a thing of the past this school year so we've been getting creative with ways to make individual learning resources with our products. In this blog we share how to use ourStoryBricks® andPeel 'n Stick Baseplates to turn a small $1 container into a multi-purpose learning box which fits conveniently inside a student's desk.
